This icon represents the Desktop Printer spooler is active, and is currently sending a job to the this specific printer. Desktop Printer icons can only be activated if you have enabled these two System extensions; "Desktop Print Spooler" & "Desktop Printer Extension" If you double click on the Desktop Printer Icon, it will display it's spooler screen. You will be able to manage all spooled jobs from here. This is the type of window you'll see when you press Apple+P for "Print". Some printer drivers have alot more features than the one shown here, eg. the "LaserWriter v8.x" general Postscript printer driver, made by Apple. If your printer is connected by Ethernet, then it will most likely be sent to the printer as a background task.
